Blood Supply Critical; Sibley Drive Is Wednesday

Sibley, Iowa — The blood supply is at critically low levels, and your help is needed at a blood drive this Wednesday (November 24th) in Sibley.

Community Blood Bank Executive Director Ken Ver Steeg says the demand for blood continues to surpass blood collections. And with the Thanksgiving holiday nearly upon us, blood donations are needed in a big way.

He says they’re looking for all blood types for this blood drive.

Ver Steeg says they have declared a critical blood shortage. He says that’s determined by evaluating the potential collections in the short term and the anticipated usage through the next 48 to 72 hours. Ver Steeg tells us that Community Blood Bank has declared a critical blood shortage several times throughout 2021 with severe shortages in the area and no relief from the amount of blood that is being transfused short term. When we talked, Ver Steeg said that they didn’t even have enough blood to cover the next 48 hours. He says they were down to a 36-hour supply.

The hours again for the Sibley drive are from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. Again, it’s at the Osceola Regional Hospital, and they’d prefer if you could make an appointment to donate. Call 712-754-2574 to make your appointment.
