Orange City, Iowa — Even though parts of the area have received some recent rainfall, our area remains somewhat dry, and that is raising a concern among farmers. According to the latest U.S. drought monitor information, all of the four northwest Iowa counties are abnormally dry, with over half of the area in what is called “moderate drought.”
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Beef Field Specialist Beth Doran says that on the cattle-producing side, dry pastures are a concern for some.
Doran says there are basically two coping strategies for dealing with dry pastures.
She says economics will probably dictate what feed is used for supplements.
She says farmers could also sell some cows from the herd.
There’s one other consideration, says Doran.
