Central Lyon HS Honored For Registering At Least 90 Percent Of Eligible Voters

Rock Rapids, Iowa — Central Lyon High School is one school out of a record 31 Iowa high schools that have earned a state award this spring for significant achievements in registering students to vote.

Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate, the state’s top elections official, made a presentation Wednesday at West Marshall High School in State Center.

In total, Pate says nearly 34-thousand high school students are registered to vote this year.

Pate says the current voter participation trend among Iowa high school students is impressive when compared with previous generations.

Two other schools in our area were honored for getting at least 50 percent of their eligible students registered to vote. They were West Sioux High School in Hawarden and Sibley-Ocheyedan High School in Sibley.

The award is named after the famous Iowan who was instrumental in securing the passage of the 19th Amendment, granting women access to the ballot box 100 years ago.

Here is a list of the 31 schools that earned the award. Eight schools qualified for the award for the third straight year (denoted with three asterisks***). 11 schools qualified for the award for the second time (denoted with two asterisks**).
