“Click It Or Ticket” sTEP Enforcement Period Starts Monday

seat beltNorthwest Iowa — The Iowa State Patrol, along with numerous other area law enforcement agencies, will be holding a Special Traffic Enforcement Period, or sTEP, running from May 23rd through June 6th.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Iowa’s seaat belt compliance rate is at 93%, one of the best in the nation.  Still, too many of Iowa’s traffic fatalities are unbelted.  National Highway Traffic Administration statistics show that passenger vehicle occupants are buckling up more during the day, but not enough at night.  The May 23rd through June 6th sTEP campaign will consist of a “click it or ticket” campaign, as well as watching for other safety hazards on the road.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz talks about what officers will be looking for during this period, which includes the Memorial Day Weekend.

Kurtz has some advice for those who might be celebrating during the holiday weekend.

Whether celebrating or not, as you travel near or far this Memorial Day, remember to buckle up in the back seat, as well as the front.  The Iowa Department of Public Safety says rear seat passengers are three times more likely to die in a crash if they are unbuckled.  Remember, in real life we don’t get a second chance.
