Construction On New Sheldon Water Tower Could Start Yet This Year

Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon City Council members and the public heard some more information about the proposed new water tower in eastern Sheldon.

Logan Smidt with DGR Engineering of Rock Rapids talked to the council this week and gave them a few details about the tower to be erected at Country Club Road and 330th Street, which is southeast of the majority of the city. He says the installation will include 6800 feet of pipe, and, of course, the water tower, which in the industry is called an “elevated water storage tank.”

He gives us an update on how the preliminary paperwork for the tower is going.

Smidt says they plan to advertise for bids within the next couple of weeks, with a bid letting on September 29th. After that, there will be a public hearing during the October 5th Sheldon City Council Meeting. He tells us some construction could start this fall, but they anticipate that most of it will take place in 2023. The pipeline should be in by October of 2023, with the tower hoped to be completed by June of 2024, according to Smidt. He says the project is estimated to cost between $3.6 and $3.7 million.

This is an example of a composite water tower, with a concrete base and a steel tank — the other type being considered (This one happens to be for Lewis & Clark, but the projects are not related.)
