Council Approves Hiring, Promotions, Approves New Mayor Pro-Tempore

Sheldon, Iowa — This week’s Sheldon City Council meeting was fairly short in length, but packed a lot of action into the time occupied.

The Sheldon Fire Company officially has a new chief after Wednesday’s meeting. City Manager Sam Kooiker tells us more.

Hindt has served as acting chief since former chief Dennis Kruger retired at the end of November.

In other action, Kooiker says the newest officer on the Sheldon Police Department was sworn in at Wednesday’s meeting.

Within the past few months, the police department has seen both of its sergeants retire. Interviews were recently held and Kooiker says the Council approved the promotions of two of the department’s officers to the rank of sergeant.

Jacobsma, while fairly new to the Sheldon Police Department, is a law enforcement veteran, having spent 15 years on the Sanborn Police Department before coming to Sheldon earlier this year. Meineke is a Sheldon native who will celebrate his fourth anniversary as a full-time Sheldon officer next month. Prior to that, he served as a reserve officer for the Sheldon, Rock Valley, and Sanborn Police Departments.

A new Mayor Pro-Tempore was approved by the Council at Wednesday’s meeting. Councilman Brad Hindt had served in that capacity, but stepped down when he was appointed Fire Chief. Kooiker tells us more.

The next regular Sheldon City Council meeting will be held Wednesday, December 21st.
