Council Approves Plan To Reopen Community Services Center

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council met Wednesday, they took the first step toward taking the Community Building access back to pre-COVID normal.  Currently access to the building is by appointment only, but beginning June 25th the west  entry door will be open, while both the west and north doors will be open as exits. The City Clerk’s office will be locked, but will have a doorbell for those who wish to enter, while still allowing them to maintain the proper social distancing.  The Police Department will also be accessible, but the meeting rooms will not be available for rent. City Manager Sam Kooiker says the employees will be offered masks to wear, and the public may wear masks at their own discretion.

In other business, the council had asked for bids to remove an old corn crib from land owned by the City on South 5th Avenue. The only offer they received was made at Wednesday’s meeting by Chad Schnoor and that offer was accepted by the council.  Schnoor will pay one hundred dollars for the corn crib and have it removed, except for the concrete, by Labor Day.

The council also moved the rezoning of the former Sunset Motel property to July 1st to coincide with the hearing and first reading of the rezone for the property to the south of the Sunset Motel to be Mobile Home Residential, consistent with its current use.

In other action, the council confirmed the hiring of Haley Gurtler as Crossroads Pavilion Assistant General Manager, gave their approval to a request by O’Brien County Relay for Life to hold a parade on August 3rd, and clarified the City’s plans for a fireworks display on September 6th, the cost of which will be $7,500.00, with the City and SCDC paying at least one thousand dollars each. They’re hoping the balance of the funds will come from business and individual donations. In the event that either RiseFest or Celebration Days are canceled because of COVID-19, the fireworks will also be canceled and the money that had been paid for them would be refunded.
