Council To Accept Police Chief Resignation, Appoint Interim Chief

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council meets this Wednesday November 6th, they will be asked to act on the retirement of Police Chief Lyle Bolkema and confirm the appointment of Officer David Dykstra as Interim Chief.  City Manager Sam Kooiker and Mayor Greg Geels have recommended Dykstra who has said he is not applying for the permanent position.  Kooiker will recommend that the council explore hiring a consultant to assist in finding a new chief.

In other business, the council will hold a public hearing on an amendment to the Zoning Ordinance pertaining to Downtown Residential use.  The request comes from the Planning and Zoning Commission in response to requests from two downtown properties who want to convert part of their 1st floor to a residential area, something not allowed in downtown buildings under the current ordinance.

The Council will also hear the first reading of two ordinance amendments pertaining to garbage pickup.    The first would be in response from the garbage haulers to require residents to use “automated standardized garbage cans” with the hinged lid and pickup bar in front.  The other ordinance change would be to increase their recycling pick-up to every two weeks.  There are no rate increases in either of these proposals.

The council will be asked to authorize the hiring of Tim Loeschen as a part-time reserve officer, and adopt a new 28E agreement with Lynn Township in Sioux County for fire protection.

Wednesday’s meeting will begin at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
