Council To Discuss Fire Chief Appointment At Wednesday Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council meets this Wednesday, November 16th, one of the items on their agenda will be the appointment of a Chief for the Sheldon Fire Company.

The Fire Chief position is one that is filled by City Council appointment. The opening comes due to the retirement of current Fire Chief Denny Kruger. Kruger’s retirement becomes effective at the end of this month.

According to the Agenda for Wednesday’s meeting, 1st Assistant Fire Chief Brad Hindt has submitted a Letter of Interest in the position. Chief Kruger, 2nd Assistant Chief Scott Meineke and Village Northwest Unlimited President and CEO Barry Whitsell have all sent letters in support of Hindt to the Council.

There are a couple of items of specific interest on the Council’s Consent Agenda for Wednesday’s meeting. Those are the resignation of Sheldon Rec Director Jake Kerr, who has been leading the Rec Department for nearly 9 years. Kerr has accepted the position of Recreation Director for the City of Tea, South Dakota. The other is the resignation of Sheldon Police Officer Shane Nellis. Officer Nellis joined the Sheldon Police Department as a Reserve Officer in September, 2020 and became a full-time officer in February of this year. He has cited personal reasons for his departure, which was effective November 10th.

In other action, The Council is expected to set the date and time for a public hearing and bid letting on the 7th Avenue Storm Sewer Project.
