Will There Be Labor Day Fireworks? Stay Tuned

Sheldon, Iowa — There will be no Sheldon Celebration days this Labor Day Weekend, but there still could be several events taking place.

The Sheldon City Council had voted to help sponsor a fireworks display September 6th, with the stipulation that if either Celebration Days or RiseFest would be canceled the fireworks would also be canceled. But, when the Council meets this Wednesday, August 5th they will be presented with a resolution to re-authorize the fireworks display for the Labor Day Weekend. They will also consider a request from the Northwest Iowa Tractor Pullers to hold a Tractor Pull September 5th at 1:30 p.m. They would like to hold the event at the tree dump site on Monroe Avenue

In other business the council will also be asked to okay the final pay request for the 16th Street Project. The project was initially projected to cost a total of over seven hundred thousand dollars, but the final construction cost was only $609,000.00. The bulk of this was covered by a federal-aid reimbursement, leaving the city to pay the balance. The cost to the City to rehabilitate 16th Street from Iselin to Washington Avenue was only $101,300.00.

Other items on the agenda include The Mayor’s appointment of Diane Merley to the Crossroads Pavilion Board, approval of the 2nd Quarter Ambulance Uncollectible Accounts, and a resolution to purchase land from Lois and Daniel Klein for the Thorman Waste Water Lift Station.

The final item on the agenda is a closed session to discuss the potential purchase of real estate.

Wednesday’s meeting will begin at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center
