Council To Tackle Varied Agenda Wednesday

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council meets this Wednesday September 18th, they will address several items of old business, including the proposed merger of the two unions that represent City employees. The council will also address the Wastewater Treatment project, and the proposed MidAmerican Franchise agreements.

Union representative Preston DeBoer plans to present a letter signed by city employees regarding the pending merger stipulation and amendment, which will probably be placed on a future agenda for consideration.

The council will be asked to approve a pay request for the Wastewater Treatment Plant project that reflects the report that Hoogendoorn Construction has completed the required work for substantial completion of the facility.  At a recent meeting it was reported that the new plant is currently handling all city wastewater flow.

The council will also consider a petition that has been filed with respect to the proposed electric and natural gas franchises with MidAmerican Energy.  Originally the council had proposed franchise agreements that included  franchise fees.  But, after hearing public comments, they decided to enter into franchise agreements without the fees. However, on September 12th, the City received a petition with fifty signatures calling for a vote of the public on the proposed franchise agreements.

In New Business the council is expected to authorize a request for proposals for redevelopment of three properties destined for demolition and disposal, which are now owned by the City: the Sunset Motel; the former DJ’s Redemption Service at 428 West Park Street; and the house at 1023 Garfield Avenue.

Wednesday’s meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
