Dangerous Heat & Humidity This Weekend

Heat and humidity will expand across the region today and persist through the weekend. Areas from around Yankton into northwest Iowa will see the greatest impacts, with afternoon heat indices of 95 to 102 degrees expected for multiple days. The heat and humidity will contribute to increasing storm chances as the weekend progresses, with scattered strong to severe storms possible, especially later Saturday and again on Sunday into Sunday night. Locally heavy rain will also be possible.

Heat and humidity will return by the upcoming weekend. We’re projecting temperatures in the 90s, with heat index values approaching 100 degrees! Heat is the number 1 killer on average across the country. Please be sure to follow the Do’s and Don’ts for this upcoming heat wave.

Scattered strong to severe storms, along with the risk of locally heavy rain, will move into the region this weekend. Large hail looks to be a greater threat on Saturday evening/overnight and Sunday afternoon, while Sunday night could bring a greater risk of heavy rain. With the potential of nighttime storms, be sure you have a way to receive any possible warnings while you’re sleeping. If camping, be especially weather-aware and know the location of the nearest sturdy shelter.

…HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM FRIDAY TO 7 PM CDT SUNDAY…

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has issued a Heat Advisory, which is in effect from 1 PM Friday to 7 PM CDT Sunday.

* TEMPERATURE…Heat indices are expected to reach 99 to 105 each of Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Actual air temperature will reach the mid to upper 90s each day.

* IMPACTS…The combination of heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended exposure.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink plenty of fluids…stay in an air-conditioned room…stay out of the sun…and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions…if you work or spend time outside. When possible…reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work…the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency…call 9 1 1.
