Dispose Of Unused Prescriptions On Saturday

Northwest Iowa — Those little amberish-brown plastic bottles full of pills in your medicine cabinet probably need to be tossed out, but you shouldn’t just chuck them in the trash or down the toilet. However, hanging onto them is also a bad idea — they could fall into the wrong hands and could be abused.

The next National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 24, form 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Officials with the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office say that too often, unused prescription drugs end up getting abused by someone other than the person they were prescribed for. They say that’s dangerous and often tragic.

Experts say turning in the unused drugs not only keeps them from getting into the hands of someone who might misuse them, but it also keeps them from being flushed down the toilet or into landfills where they can impact water supplies.

While there is a focus on dropping off your drugs and medications on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., several of the locations where you can get rid of your unwanted drugs are open year-round, some of them 24/7, and others during the business’s hours. Many law enforcement offices, pharmacies, and medical clinics have drop-off boxes. There is a collection site locator at takebackday.dea.gov, but not all locations are listed. We at KIWA advise you to check the locator, but if a local site is not found, try calling one of the types of locations listed near you to see if they have a drop-off site.
