Expert: Higher Risk Of Severe Weather Today — Stay Aware

Northwest Iowa — As of late Wednesday morning, northwest Iowa and adjacent areas are in an area of “enhanced risk” for severe thunderstorms.

That’s from the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma. We talked to National Weather Service Meteorologist-In-Charge at the Sioux Falls office, Todd Heitkamp, and he tells us what that means.

He says larger hail will be the main threat with tornadoes possible.

Heitkamp says we’ll probably be looking at a mid-to-late afternoon timeframe.

Heitkamp tells us to stay weather-aware this afternoon and make sure we have more than one way to receive watches and warnings, which he says are fairly likely to be issued this evening. A Tornado Watch has been issued for the area until 9:00 p.m. tonight. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have been issued to our north and west.
