Northwest Iowa — Unfortunately, many parents report feeling rushed, pressured, stressed and unable to do all they have to do.
They have a hard time balancing the demands of their work and careers with those of their family and personal life. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach human sciences family life specialist Lori Hayungs says the fact that perfect balance is possible is a myth.
Hayungs moderates a blog called “The Science of Parenting” for extension, and she says the balancing act is their topic of the month.
She says parents need to take care of the parents first. She gave the example of the safety talk on an airplane in which parents are told to put their own oxygen mask on first, and then assist their children.
She says that parents who have a social network and concrete support in times of need are better able to provide safe environments and nurturing experiences for their children.
You can join the Science of Parenting blog at www.scienceofparenting.org. ISU Extension and Outreach specialists share and discuss research-based information and resources to help parents rear their children. Parents can join in the conversation and share thoughts and experiences, as well as how they handle parenting responsibilities.
