Northwest Iowa — This weekend was a busy one for fire calls in northwest Iowa. In addition to the calls we told you about regarding a farm building being destroyed in a fire near Sioux Center and a tractor being destroyed in a fire near Hartley on Saturday, there were other fire calls as well.
The Rock Valley Fire Department responded to a ditch fire call at 3380 Dipper Avenue at 5:43 Saturday evening, November 5th. That’s about three miles south and four west of Rock Valley. Rock Valley Fire Chief Brent Eshuis says it started as a controlled burn of a pile of leaves and other debris that got out of control and started burning the ditch. He says that fortunately the crops had already been harvested in that area. He said that the fire extended for a couple of hundred feet. He says they put it out with about 500 gallons of water and were only on-scene for about 15 minutes.
The Ocheyedan Fire Department was called out to a tractor fire call near Tyler Avenue and 220th Street at 4:38 a.m. Sunday morning, November 6th. Fire Chief Dan Hartwig says it could have been much worse. He says stalks around the motor and transmission got hot and started smoldering. He says damage was minimal.
