Former Westfield Clerk Gets Probation For Embezzlement

Westfield, Iowa — Probation — that’s the sentence for the former city clerk of Westfield who was charged with first-degree theft after she took city funds.

The Plymouth County Attorney’s office filed charges against Angela Sorensen in July of 2019. The state auditor’s office conducted an investigation of the Westfield city funds dating from January 1st of 2013 through September 30th of 2017.

The audit was conducted at the request of the city council. The state auditor’s office identified $39,970 of undeposited receipts, $28,060.30 of improper disbursements, and $6,163.46 of unsupported disbursements. The total amounted to more than $74,000.

Sorensen claims she doesn’t remember committing the crime, and had entered an Alford plea. That’s a plea that concedes that a jury would have enough evidence to convict her, but she does not plead guilty. She was sentenced to five years’ probation and 50 hours of community service.
