Groundbreaking On $9-Million Renovation Project At NCC Will Be Monday

Sheldon, Iowa — Ground will be broken on Monday, April 26th for a $9 million renovation project at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon.

NCC President Dr. Alethea Stubbe tells us more.

(as said) “Very soon we’ll see some dirt move for our health sciences addition and remodeling project which will allow us to train even more healthcare workers: nurses, CNAs, radiological technologists, even starting next fall we’ll have medical lab technicians.”

She says the demand for healthcare workers is high.

(as said) “These healthcare workers are so needed by our area hospitals and long-term care facilities that we’re very excited will be able to expand the number of workers we train. The groundbreaking is going to be Monday, April 26 at 4 p.m.”

College officials tell us Building H was originally constructed in 2004 with an addition completed in 2008 and is almost 18,000 square feet. With the remodeling and expansion of the main floor to over 34,000 square feet and the addition of a second floor at just over 14,000 square feet, the total area of the new Health facilities will be what officials call “an impressive” 48,292 square feet.

The first floor will have two nursing classrooms, a student lounge, additional restrooms, a simulation area designed as four pods housed around a central nursing station — which is built to replicate a hospital setting, a conference room, a public lounge, and small study areas. It will also have a dedicated space for CNA to include a testing area, classroom space, and a lab teaching area. They tell us that Emergency Services’ area will consist of a virtual simulation space as well as dedicated instructional space. Radiologic Technology x-ray equipment will be repositioned in its own area and will be supported by dedicated classroom space.

And that’s just on the first floor. The second floor is to have 20 offices, two conference rooms, and general workspace. College officials also say that about half of the second floor is dedicated to future expansion. Right now the plans are for three additional classrooms and a large open area that can be developed as needed. They say the space will allow flexibility for future program development and expansion as needed.
