Harris, Iowa — Harris voters are going to the poll this Tuesday, December 13th to elect a mayor and a city council member.
According to Harris City Clerk Holly Wilson, the election is to fill a vacancy in the mayor’s chair.
Wilson says Mayor Greg Spaethe had resigned, but then was re-appointed to the mayor post by the council. She says the citizens of Harris gathered signatures for a petition to hold a special election to contest the appointment of Spaethe by the council. She says that before the November city council meeting, Spaethe sent a message to Clerk Wilson and the mayor pro tempore that he was residing out of town and would no longer be around. Dean Phillips threw his hat into the ring for the mayor chair and is running unopposed.
Council member Carol Biggs was appointed this summer to fill a vacancy that occurred when council member Jon Sweet resigned. Wilson says that since this had been a council appointment, Biggs’ name had to be on the next ballot to be elected. She says Jeff Loring’s name was placed on the ballot by petition. Loring was the man who was the mayor of Harris before Mayor Spaethe.
The polling place will be the Harris Civic Center, and the poll is open this Tuesday, December 13th from noon until 8:00 p.m.
