Hawarden Big Sioux River Days Is This Weekend

Hawarden, Iowa — Sheldon’s not the only town with their summer celebration over the Labor Day weekend. One of the other towns that does is Hawarden.

The weekend starts on Saturday with a tractor ride, pedal tractor pull, an outdoor craft fair, and a corn maze. That night there’s a demolition derby, and a 60th reunion for the class of ’57.

On Sunday, a community worship service starts things out at 9 a.m. The outdoor craft fair and corn maze continue to be available too. The Little Miss Big Sioux River Princess will be crowned at a 1 p.m. ceremony. That night there’s a fire department open house and meal at the fire station from 5 to 7 p.m. A community hymn sing will follow at 7:15 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and there will be a fireworks display starting about 9 p.m.

Just like Sheldon’s Celebration Days, the big day of the festival is Labor Day Monday in Hawarden. The FCCLA Walk and Run registration starts at 7 a.m., with the race to follow at 7:30. There’s a CRC pancake breakfast. Troop 209 will open their food stand at 10 a.m. The outdoor craft fair and corn maze will still be available. There will be a BBQ fundraiser lunch at Trinity Lutheran at 11, and Pie à la Mode will be available at the Baptist Church from 11 to 4.

The Kiddie Parade starts at 1, with the Grand Parade to start at 1:15. Lots of activities will be available in the park after the parade including an obstacle course, a petting zoo, laser tag, a bounce house, a mariachi band, and more. Plus Jerry and the Wash Tub Band will play at 2.

Many different historical buildings and displays will be available during different times during the festival, including the Calliope Village buildings
