Hawarden Man Gets Suspended Sentence, Time In RTF, Probation For Burglary

Orange City, Iowa — A Hawarden man has been sentenced to a suspended prison term for burglary.

Sioux County Attorney Thomas Kunstle says 19-year-old Devin Lee Short of Hawarden has been sentenced in Sioux County District Court for the crime of Burglary In The Third Degree, a Class D Felony.

Kunstle says on August 29, 2023, the Hawarden Senior Center reported a burglary to the Hawarden Police Department, after finding window screens cut and removed. Upon investigation, police identified the suspect as Devin Short, who later admitted to committing the burglary. Earlier, on June 30, 2023, Short had been placed on probation for unrelated crimes, and failed to report any new charges to his probation officer.

The Court sentenced Short to a five-year indeterminate prison term which was suspended and he was placed on probation for a period not to exceed two years. Short was further ordered to serve 120 days in the Sioux County jail for contempt for violating his probation. After that, he will successfully complete the Department of Corrections Residential Treatment Facility in Sioux City. Short was also ordered to pay criminal fines and restitution to the facility he burglarized.
