Highs Around 70, Fire Risk Forecast For Sunday, Then A Pretty Good Chance For Precip

Sheldon, Iowa — The National Weather Service says we might hit 70 degrees this Sunday in Sheldon.

If we do, it will be the first time since October 20th, 2021 that the mercury in our thermometers has reached the 70-degree mark or higher. It sounds like a great day to spend outdoors to celebrate the first day of spring, as spring will arrive at 10:33 Sunday morning.

Winds are supposed to blow at 15 to 20 miles per hour in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 25.

The warm temperatures, combined with the winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation, however, are a recipe for fire danger. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Sunday afternoon and evening.

But — all that dry crusty vegetation may get at least a little wet over the following few days and nights.

There’s a 20 percent chance of rain on Monday, but a 70 percent chance on Monday night and Tuesday. There’s an 80 percent chance on Tuesday night. It could mix with snow after midnight.

At this point, there is a 70 percent chance for snow on Wednesday, mixing with and changing to rain in the afternoon.
