HMS Students Pick All Republicans In Mock Election

Hartley, Iowa — Schools around northwest Iowa have been doing straw polls and mock elections to teach students how elections work. One of the schools participating in such an activity was Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn High School in Hartley.

According to Mr. Jim Thomas, the HMS High School American Government Teacher, they held their High School Student Election on Thursday, October 29, 2020 for grades 9-12.

He says 64.2% of the high school population turned out to vote, including 41% of freshmen, 77% of sophomores, 59% of the juniors, and 85% of the seniors.

Mr. Thomas also gave us the results. For President, Donald Trump received 80 percent of the vote, with 20 percent going to Joe Biden.

In the race for US Senator, the HMS high school student population voted 79.8% for Republican Joni Ernst, with 20.2% voting for Democrat Theresa Greenfield.

And had the HMS high school student population decided the 2020 race for US Representative, Republican Randy Feenstra would have been our new Congressman, defeating Democrat J.D. Scholten by a margin of 80.8 to 19.2 percent.
