IRS Scam UPDATE

Scam Alert

Sheldon, Iowa:  Sheldon Police are again warning area residents of a phone scam involving the IRS.  According to Officer Dave Dykstra, a Sheldon resident received a phone message asking the individual answering to call 202 697 9007 because back taxes were due.  The individual called the number and was told if the taxes weren’t paid now police would be sent to their home in 20 minutes.  The Sheldon resident told the scammer that he knew some Sheldon Police Officers and would call one of them to see if this was legit.  Upon hearing that the scammer hung up.

People need to be aware that the IRS will NEVER:

  1. Call to demand immediate payment or call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill
  2. Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say that you owe
  3. Require you to use a specific payment for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card
  4. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone
  5. Threaten to bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying

Don’t let someone intimidate you into sharing your personal information with them.   If you have a question about your taxes, contact your tax preparer.
