Kooiker Updates Status Of Nuisance Properties

Sheldon, Iowa — Earlier this year a trio of Sheldon properties were declared nuisance properties by the City of Sheldon. The three included the old Sunset Motel on South 2nd Avenue, the former DJ’s Redemption Center on West Park Street, and the residence located at 1023 Garfield Avenue which has been uninhabited for several years, and become uninhabitable.

Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker updates us on the current status of each of those three nuisance properties.

He outlines the three bids the City has received.

Kooiker says the City is excited about the third offer, but it is subject to the public hearing process.

The City of Sheldon has filed Municipal Infraction complaints on two other nuisance properties in recent weeks. The first is the residence at 721 8th Street. Kooiker tells KIWA that the owner of the property was scheduled to be in Magistrate Court in Primghar this past Tuesday, December 3rd. Kooiker says that case has been continued for two weeks, and that a settlement agreement is in the works.

The second involves a Municipal Infraction Citation that was issued to the owner of the property at 305 Washington Avenue. According to the citation, the property was declared a nuisance due to accumulated junk on the property, including iron, steel and other metals and materials of all kinds, by storing multiple junk vehicles on the property, and by failing to comply with off-street parking requirements. That case  is scheduled to be heard in O’Brien County Magistrate Court at 9:00 am on Tuesday, December 17th.
