Le Mars Man To Federal Prison For Embezzling From Dairy Workers Union

Le Mars, Iowa — A Le Mars man who admittied to embezzling close to $100-thousand from a union pension fund will be spending a year in federal prison for his crimes.

According to the US Attorney’s Office, 53-year old Curtis Lang pled guilty to one count of Embezzlement and Theft of Labor Union Assets.  Authorities say Lang admitted that from about 2005 to 2009 he was Vice President and Treasurer of the United Dairy Workers of Le Mars, and served as the Union’s President and Treasurer from 2011 until 2014.

Court officials say Lang admitted that, over a period of 10-years, he embezzled over $98-thousand in funds from Union bank accounts. Lang said he acted alone in the embezzlement, and made efforts to hide the crime from other Union officials.

According to the US Attorney’s Office, US District Judge Mark Bennett sentenced Lang to 12-months’ in federal prison. In addition a special Assessment of $100 was imposed, and Lang was ordered to make restitution to the United Dairy Workers of Le Mars in the amount of $95,223.49.  Bennett also imposed a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term, including a term of 6-months of home confinement with electronic monitoring.

Court officials say Lang was released on the bond previously set and is to surrender to the United States Marshal on a date yet to be set.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jamie Bowers and investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor.
