Le Mars Site Proposed For Superfund List

Le Mars, Iowa — The US Environmental Protection Agency is proposing adding a site in Le Mars to its National Priorities List for Superfund sites.

The Le Mars site, near Iowa Highway 3, was discovered in April 2008 during an investigation conducted for the nearby Le Mars Coal Gas Plant Site. Groundwater sampling identified the presence of tetrachloroethene (PCE) and its breakdown products but they are not associated with the Le Mars Coal Gas Plant Site. The site must meet EPAs requirements and there will be a 60-day public comment period before it would be added to the priorities list. That list serves as the basis for prioritizing EPA Superfund cleanup money.
