Lyon County Deputies Say A Final Goodbye To K9 Athos

Rock Rapids, Iowa — The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has lost a former K9 Officer.

According to the staff at the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, retired K9 Athos was laid to rest on Friday.

They tell us K9 Athos started his career in May 2012 with Deputy Rob Ver Meer. He “proudly and willingly served Lyon County until he retired in July 2021.”

The sheriff’s office says that during his short retirement, Athos enjoyed his time with family, but could not erase the need to please his handler and still had the urge to jump into the back of his cruiser.

Not only was he well-loved by his family and his friends at work, he was also valued by the staff and officers at the sheriff’s office for his significant contributions to the department. They tell us “K9 Athos did many great things while serving Lyon County and made his handler extremely proud, whether he was doing his job, showing everyone how great he was by bringing home awards, or just being a loyal friend.”

KIWA salutes K9 Athos with a final, “Good boy, Athos, good boy.”
