Lyon County Engineer Resigns, “Un-Resigns”

Rock Rapids, Iowa — At the last Lyon County Board of Supervisors’ meeting in February, County Engineer Daryl Albertson submitted his resignation. However, at the first meeting in March, he decided to stay on.

According to Lyon County Auditor Jen Smit, Supervisor Steve Herman wanted to encourage Albertson to rethink resignation and look to the possibility of finding an assistant to the engineer. He says the lack of office staff when starting the position, in the means of techs and assistants, put the office behind. Herman notes that Albertson came into an office with no engineer assistant, one engineering tech, and a new office manager.

The Board discussed options for the department which included offering Albertson the opportunity to stay with Lyon County as the engineer and looking to hire an assistant engineer that might be interested in moving into the engineer position in the future. The Board discussed the importance of building the department to be able to make a smooth transition in the future when Albertson decides to retire.

The Board asked if they would deny the resignation would Albertson be willing to stay. Albertson agreed to stay on if an assistant and/or additional techs can be hired.

Albertson says he has talked with an interested candidate and will reach out to see if a formal interview can be set up.
