Move Over or Slow Down

Northwest Iowa — With the arrival of the summer season, more and more people are taking to the highways, and there’s more activities along the edges of those highways, as well. As most drivers know, Iowa law requires drivers to either move over into another lane, or slow down, when they pass law enforcement vehicles conducting business along the side of the roadway.  But did you know that more than just law enforcement are protected by that law.  Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz explains.

Kurtz says the law isn’t new, by any means, and violating it can lead to a citation.

He says the law requires motorists to move over if they can do so safely, OR to slow down.  However, Kurtz says even if you CAN move over, you should still slow down, too.

Trooper Kurtz reminds us that those working along the side of the road, whether it’s a trooper with a car pulled over, rescue workers cleaning up an accident scene, or construction workers improving the highway, these people need to be able to concentrate on the job at hand, without having to worry about being hit by a passing car or truck.
