New Mural Being Painted In Orange City

Mural on First Impact by Mark Alsum
Artist’s preview of the design of the new mural

Orange City, Iowa — A brand new mural is being painted in Orange City, featuring a subject that comes as no surprise – Tulips. We had a chance to visit with Janine Calsbeek, executive director of the Orange City Arts Council. She tells us how it came together.

Calsbeek says the First Impact Building is behind the Orange City Post Office — a half a block west of Albany Avenue on First Street, near Don’s Food Center.

She tells us that the money to pay for the mural is still being raised.

Calsbeek tells us about the mural’s artist.

She says they chose tulips — because it’s “The Orange City way.”

She says she thinks people will want to take pictures in front of it. Calsbeek says this mural will have a special dedication.

The mural is being painted directly on the wall, just like the other murals in Orange City. That means the artist has to paint it in real time and out in the elements. Calsbeek says Alsum is working on the mural this week.
