New Police Chief To Take Oath Of Office At Wednesday’s Council Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon’s new Police Chief will be sworn in at this Wednesday’s (April 15th) City Council Meeting.  Scott Burtch of Glenwood actually began is duties in Sheldon on April 6th. While at Glenwood, Burtch served on that city’s Police Department, and most recently as a Mills County Sheriff’s Deputy.

In other action at Wednesday’s meeting, the council will hold a public hearing on four items. They include the rezoning of the Crossroads Pavilion area and the lot to the north from Agriculture to Arterial Commercial, and the rezoning of the former Sunset motel property. The other two items deal with the amendments to several zoning codes.  All four items will be included in one public hearing.

There will also be a public hearing on amending the Sheldon Urban Renewal Plan, which would move one step closer to using Tax Increment Financing funds for the proposed Street Improvement projects.

The council will also hold the first reading of an ordinance amending water rates. The new rates include a capital improvement component and factors in the higher interest rate that the City is now receiving on their Bank balances. The proceeds from this higher interest rate are being used to keep the water rate increase lower than expected.

Council members are also expected to vote on the city’s annual commitment of $15,000 to the Sheldon Country Club and $20,000 to the RIDES Transportation Service. The Local Option Sales Tax is the funding source for both of those expenditures.

Wednesday’s meeting begins at 4:30 in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center.
