No School at East… Here’s Why

Sheldon, Iowa – Staff at East Elementary School in Sheldon were greeted with a bit of a surprise when they arrived at work Monday Morning.

The controller for the school’s boiler malfunctioned at some point after school ended Friday and before Monday morning. While it was not a system-wide failure, there were reports of individual classrooms with temps as low as 41 degrees.

Superintendent Cory Myer received word at 8:30 a.m. and made the decision to cancel school at East while the controller was being worked on. Myer told KIWA that while the students were likely not upset about another day off, he realizes that the cancellation almost certainly caused issues for working parents who now had nowhere to bring their children for the day. Maintenance staff were able to repair the problem short term later Monday morning but the company that services the equipment was still called in to ensure this kind of malfunction doesn’t occur again.

In addition to school being called off for the day at the elementary school, the Christmas concert that was planned for the evening was postponed. It will now be taking place on Tuesday, December 3rd from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the gymnasium at East Elementary.
