Our Bookshelf Virtual Program Helps Parents Prepare Preschoolers to Read

Cherokee, Iowa – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host Our Bookshelf, a four-week virtual program for parents of preschoolers, beginning Sunday, March 27.

The program focuses on a research-based reading technique called dialogic reading, which is designed to increase prereading skills in children aged 3-6.

ISU Extension and Outreach local human sciences and youth coordinator Debbie Erpelding who will lead the program, says that research shows that preschoolers who are exposed to lots of language through books and conversations have greater academic success. She says that parents, guardians, and caregivers are welcome to participate in this program.

Each week parents will receive a book to share with their child and an accompanying parent reading guide. Additionally, for 30 minutes each week on Sunday night, parents engage virtually with other parents in an interactive and informational session.

She says that during these sessions, parents learn about planning for daily reading times, reading aloud, having conversations about language and books, extending language learning through play, and using literacy interactions to pave their child’s way for future success as a reader in a school setting.

Parent sessions will be held on Sundays, March 27, April 3, April 10, and April 24 from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

The program is free to participate in, but registration is required. To register, call the ISU Extension and Outreach Cherokee County office at 712-225-6196. The registration deadline is March 25.
