President Orders Flags To Half-Staff To Honor Longtime Congressman

Washington, DC — The US flag is flying at half-staff in memory of a man who was a sitting member of Congress.

Longtime Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings has died. He was 68. His office says Cummings died at Johns Hopkins Hospital from complications related to “longstanding health challenges.” Cummings was first elected to the House in 1996 and frequently clashed with President Trump as he investigated his administration as Chair of the Oversight Committee.

A proclamation from President Trump says that the President has ordered flags lowered as a mark of respect for the memory and longstanding public service of Representative Elijah E. Cummings, of Maryland.

The flag is to be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions through October 18, 2019, according to the proclamation.
