Sioux County, Iowa — Last week, the two major political parties chose their nominees for the position left open by the death of Iowa District Four State Representative Dwayne Alons of Hull.
The Republicans met earlier in the week. Six nominees were brought before the nominating convention. They were
- John Kooiker, Boyden
- Jeffrey Santema, Rock Valley
- David VanNingen, Rock Valley
- Kevin Van Otterloo, Rock Valley
- Jeff Vander Werff, Orange City
- Alicia Wassenaar, Orange City
The balloting went three ballots with John Kooiker winning the nomination with 61 percent of the delegate votes. Delegates were elected precinct leaders from the January, 2014 caucuses. The votes of each delegate were weighted based upon the votes cast in the last general election by precinct.
On the Democratic side, in a meeting at the Sioux Center Public Library on Thursday, ten people from five precincts attended. Those gathered there heard John Buntsma of Orange City give a short speech. After that, Buntsma was selected as the Democratic nominee for the District Four State House seat.
There will be a special election January 6th.
