Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon Community Schools Board of Education met in regular session last (Monday) night they got a look at the proposed 2017-18 District Calendar.
The proposed calendar calls for August 23rd to be the first day of classes, with May 24, 2018 being the last scheduled class day. The Thanksgiving Holiday break would begin Wednesday, November 22nd, with students back in class on Monday November 27th. The last day of class prior to the Christmas Holiday break would Friday December 22nd, with classes scheduled to resume Wednesday January 3rd. There will be a public hearing on the 2017-18 District Calendar at the Board’s regular December meeting.
In other action, the Board approved a pair of open enrollment applications, one for a student moving from the Sheldon District to the MOC-Floyd Valley District, and another enrolling out of the Sheldon District into the Boyden-Hull District. They also accepted a pair of resignations. Marcia Poyzer resigned from her Food Service position at the high school, citing health reasons, and Becky Anderson resigned from her Substitute Custodial position, saying that her family is moving from the community.
The Board also approved a pair of employment contracts at Monday’s meeting. Marty Van Westen will serve as Assistant Speech Coach at a salary of $2,284. Levi Ettleman will graduate from Northwestern College in December, and will be joining the Sheldon Community Schools as a K-6 Physical Education Teacher. Ettleman will be paid $21,291 for a 103 day contract.
The High School Spanish Club will be traveling to Costa Rica in 2018, following approval of that trip by the School Board at Monday’s meeting. The Board also named two members to the District Negotiating Team to help represent the District in collective bargaining talks with the teacher’s union for the 2017-18 school year. Kecia Hickman, along with Jessica Brink, will join Superintendent Robin Spears on that team again for the 2017-18 school year.
The Board also approved specifications, and authorized bid letting for a new school bus. They hope to have the bids back by the December meeting.
In other action, the Board approved the Licensed Employee Severance Benefit which has been made available for the three of the last four years. This benefit amounts to an early retirement program. Last year, seven teachers took advantage of that program.
