Washington, DC — In a recent Q&A, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley outlined key priorities for 2025. With the dawn of the 119th Congress, Senator Chuck Grassley steps into pivotal leadership roles, setting a robust legislative agenda aimed at judiciary independence, border security, and fiscal responsibility. In the New Congress, the U.S. Senate will be led by a Republican Majority, with Sen. John Thune of South Dakota as Majority Leader while Grassley resumes chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The committee will focus on upholding the independence of the federal judiciary and conducting oversight over the Department of Justice and federal agencies, including the FBI and DHS. Grassley, who places a high priority on congressional oversight and whistleblower protections, will also manage all Article III judicial nominations, including those to district and circuit courts, as well as the Supreme Court.
On January 3, Sen. Grassley was sworn in as President Pro Tem, a position customarily filled by the most senior member of the Senate Majority party. This role is one of only three legislative officers named in the Constitution. The only other Iowan to ascend to this constitutional office was Senator Albert B. Cummins, who served as President Pro Tempore for four Congresses in the early 20th century.
Top priorities for Congress include border security, extending the Trump tax cuts, cutting drug prices, and restoring regular order to the federal budget process. Grassley will work on these issues from the Senate Judiciary, Finance, Budget, and Agriculture Committees. He aims to secure the border, tackle violent crime, prevent a $4 trillion tax increase, restore pro-growth business provisions, and put more farm in a new five-year Farm Bill. Grassley encourages Iowans to keep in touch and share their views and concerns.
