Sheldon Council Talks Zoning At Wednesday Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council met Wednesday they gave their approval to a zoning ordinance amendment on swimming pool fences and moved on to the next reading a zoning ordinance amendment on storage sheds.

The council also approved the first reading of an ordinance amendment of the code pertaining to floodplain management. Sheldon has participated in the National Flood Insurance Program since 1975. To remain in good standing with the program, FEMA is requiring the city to update its floodplain management ordinance.

The council then held a public hearing on vacating a portion of West 11th Street and Railroad Avenue right-of-way, which is located west of Ag Partners and east of Western Avenue. A representative of Ag Partners told the council that the company’s intention is to clean up that property and sell it to the Dykstra family. The council voted to vacate and dispose of that right-of-way. They then held another public hearing, this time on a request from the Zoning Administrator to vacate the right-of-way on a portion of land located west of the Ag Partners request and east of Western Avenue.  After hearing comments from interested parties, the council voted to vacate the right-of-way, but options for disposal of the property will be discussed at a later date.

The council was presented with the city’s 5-year Capital Improvement plan, as well as the Emergency Services 15-year plan. The information will be used at budget sessions, which are planned for January 26 and 27, 2021.
