Sheldon Middle School Holds Science Fair For 8th Graders

Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon Middle School held it’s 22nd Annual 8th Grade Science Fair recently.The fair involved 8th grade students designing a controlled experiment to help solve a problem or answer a question. 

The top three winners of the Sheldon Science Fair now move on to the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa competition, which will be held next March at Hilton Coliseum on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames.

1st place winners at the Sheldon Fair were Brianna Cannoy and Christina Fjeld, whose project topic looked at how the type of liquid in which a bone is submerged affects the amount of bone degradation.

2nd place went to Alex Van Surksum for the project investigated how the temperature of the room affects the pitch of a tuba.

The 3rd place winner was Brady Van Meeteren, who looked into how the type of grass grown in soil affects the amount of nitrogen which leaches through the soil.

Those are the top 3 finishers who will be taking their projects to the State Science Fair in Ames.

Orab 8th graders and their projects who received honorable mention include:
Emma Weber who looked into how the length of a softball pitcher’s step/stride affects the time it takes for a pitched ball to reach its target.
Lexi Full who looked into how the type of disinfectant used on different surfaces affects the amount of bacteria that can grow on the surface.
Joe Kim who wanted to find out how the type of material added to ice affects the amount ice melted and water produced.
Max Hamill and Raymond Lee who designed an experiment to figure out how the amount of water added to cement affects the amount of conrete that breaks off when a weight is dropped on it.
Rachel Maggert, who wondered how the shape of iron affects the amount of force needed to bend iron of different shapes.
Thomas Badberg’s project was on how the type of wood affects the amount of force needed to bend the piece of wood.
Braden Schwarz project on how sterilizing field soil by heating it affects the ability of field soil to grow soybeans.
