Sheldon School Board Gearing Up For Start Of School

Sheldon, Iowa – The Sheldon Community Schools Board met in regular session on Wednesday, July 10th at 5:00 pm in the high school library.

There were three open enrollments, one contract adjustment, and one contract offer presented for consideration, all of which were approved by the board. Reports on summer school at East Elementary and the Middle School were given, and skills/test scores for the Middle and High Schools were also reviewed.

Open House will take place at East Elementary and the Middle School on Wednesday, August 21st from 5:00 – 6:30 pm. At 6:30 pm there will be a special 7th grade meeting for parents and students in the Middle School library to discuss the 7th grade transition. Student registration may be done online this year, but there will also be dates available to stop at the school to register your students as well.

Superintendent Cory Myer presented information to the board on the Gifted & Talented Program and on Title 1 Reading allocation reductions. The Board also reviewed items on the PPEL/SAVE project list and discussed the IASB legislative priorities for 2019-20. The 2018-19 IASB resolutions adopted included standards and accountability, Area Education Agencies, the school funding policy, and SAVE (Secure an Advanced Vision for Education). The new legislative priorities adopted for the 2019-20 school year include Preschool, Mental Health, school funding policy, and supplemental state aid.

In new business, Tracy Meyer was appointed the Board Secretary-Treasurer, Cindy Barwick was designated the District Equity Coordinator for Title VI, VII & IX, ADA, and Section 504, and the Level 1 Investigators and Alternates were selected, all for the 2019-20 school year. This year’s District Leadership Team was approved, as were various Partnership Agreements between NCC and the Sheldon Community District, and the district Human Resources Director operational sharing agreement.

The Sheldon School Board election will take place on Tuesday, November 5th, to align with local city elections and there are three positions that will be up for renewal/election at that time. The first day to file nomination papers is Monday, August 26th.
