Sheldon, Several Other Jazz Choirs Singing At State Contest In Spencer

Northwest Iowa — Jazz singers from across northwest Iowa are in Spencer for the annual Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Festival.

Any school that has a vocal jazz program can send a jazz ensemble, says Sheldon Choral Director Mr. Brandon Lenderink.

Lenderink says some contests are for placement, and some are for a rating. This particular contest is for a rating, he says.

Lenderink says some schools will use tonight’s performance for another use as well.

In his fourth year as Sheldon’s vocal director, Lenderink is actually a Sheldon High School alumnus himself.

Mr. Lenderink tells us about their performance numbers.

Lenderink says the group is an auditioned group, and as per state requirements, the 11 members of the jazz group are all members of the school’s curricular choir.
