Sheldon, Iowa — With the cancellation of the annual Village Northwest Unlimited Independence Day Celebration due to the pandemic, Sheldon’s very popular fireworks display was cancelled, too. Now the City of Sheldon and the Sheldon Chamber & Development Corporation have plans to include a fireworks display as part of Celebration Days this year.
Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker tells us more.
(As above) “We are looking at having a celebration, a fireworks celebration, on September 6 to coincide with RiseFest and Celebration Days. We had been looking at July 3, and then it was simply too difficult to put it together so quickly, and the company that we’re looking at using, another town snapped them up before we could get them.”
We asked Kooiker where the September 6th fireworks display would be held.
(As above) “We have some good options, and that’s right now being explored. Partly it depends where things sit with the COVID situation. And the reality is if either RiseFest or Celebration Days cancel there won’t be a display.”
Plans for the public fireworks display are going forward, and Kooiker says they’re seeking donations to help defray the cost.
(As above) “We’re looking at an approximate cost of seventy-five-hundred dollars. And we’re looking at a fund raising effort in the community, and we’re asking people to help pitch in for that. and SCDC and the City would pick up the balance.”
If you’d like to contribute to Sheldon’s September 6th public fireworks display, you can either drop off or send your donation to Sheldon Chamber & Development Corporation, P.O. Box 276, Sheldon IA 51201.
