Sheriff And Three Osceola County Deputies Receive Lifesaver Awards

Sibley, Iowa — A trio of Osceola County Deputies were recognized Wednesday evening for saving the lives of two Osceola County residents on two separate occasions.

The Sheriff’s Office and the Osceola County Emergency Medical Service presented the awards to Sgt. Matt Julius, and Deputies Tyler Bos and Zane Roberts.

Osceola County EMS Director Sande Smith says Sgt. Julius was recognized for saving the life of Gary Iedema after Iedema collapsed during a dance at Alley 7 in Sibley.

Smith says that wasn’t the first time Sgt. Julius had used his AED to save someone’s life. She related how, while off duty, Sgt. Julius was called upon to respond to a chiropractic clinic located directly across the street from his residence, and used his AED to save the life of a patient who had stopped breathing.

She says Deputies Matt Bos and Zane Roberts were recognized for saving the life of Charles Klaassen in an incident that took place just last month.

In a presentation that took Sheriff Doug Weber by surprise, Smith presented the Sheriff with a lifesaver award for saving the life of an Osceola County Jail inmate several years ago.

Smith says each Osceola County Sheriff’s patrol car has been equipped with an AED, or Automatic External Defibrillator for more than 15-years.

Smith says the AEDs in each patrol car is important since the deputies are often the first 1st responders to arrive at a scene.

In addition to the Lifesaving Awards presented Wednesday, two long-time employees of the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office were recognized for their years of service. Lt. Seth Hoffman was recognized for 25-years serving Osceola County, and Smith, who is also a 911 Dispatcher, was recognized for her 15-years of service.
