Snow System Dumps From Four To Over Seven Inches On Northwest Iowa

Northwest Iowa — Snow in November isn’t unusual, but northwest Iowa did receive a little more than we normally do for this time of year on Tuesday.

The wintery precip started with the icy type and turned to the white type. Early school closings, late starts, businesses closing early, and freezing rain causing slick driving conditions were the rule. A number of accidents were reported including a school bus on its side.

The snow was wet and heavy, and if your snowblower didn’t have enough power, you would have gotten further with a shovel, due to all the plug-ups.

Snowfall amounts in the area ranged from a reported 7.5 inches in Hull to 4 inches in multiple locations in Sioux County.

Some snowfall amounts from around the area:
Hull 7.5″
Sibley 6.5″
Rock Rapids 5.5″
George 5.5″ …precip total 0.51″ (thanks to Clarence Stubbe)
Sheldon 4.5″ …precip total 0.56
North of Sioux Center 4″
Orange City 4″
Ireton area 4″

There’s a chance for snow on Thursday as well, and Thursday night we’ll take a trip into the deep freeze, with lows in the single digits. But we should see more melting on Friday with highs above freezing and sunny skies. We should see some sun on Saturday and Sunday too, and we should make it into the 40s, according to the National Weather Service.
