Summer Lunch Program Ready To Serve For Sixth Year

Sheldon, Iowa — This Friday was the last day of classes for students in the Sheldon Community Schools, which means that Monday, June 3rd is the first day for the 2019 Sheldon Summer Lunch Program.

2019 marks the sixth year for the Sheldon Summer Lunch Program, which runs each Monday through Friday beginning the day after Sheldon’s school year ends, until the day before the next school year begins, with all meals served in the basement of the Sheldon United Methodist Church.

Summer Lunch Program Coordinator Tricia Meendering says it started off as a program to feed school-aged kids lunch over the summer — but she says they’ll feed anybody that comes through the door.

She says in the five years they’ve been offering the meals, they’ve served over 10,000 meals.

According to Meendering, they can always use volunteers and donations. In fact, the program has always been run 100 percent on donations and volunteers. Volunteers are welcome to just show up between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. You might bake, serve, clean up, or just sit and visit with those receiving a meal. If you’d like to give a monetary donation, you can contact Meendering or the United Methodist Church office.

Meendering says they plan to continue with the summer lunch program for as long as there is a need.
