Two More COVID Deaths, 106 New Positive Cases In Four-County Area

Northwest Iowa — Two more residents of the four-county area of O’Brien, Sioux, Osceola and Lyon Counties have perished due to COVID-related illnesses in the past seven days, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health.

The deaths were one resident each of Sioux and O’Brien Counties. That brings the total number of deaths in the area to 193 since the pandemic began; 76 in Sioux County, 59 in O’Brien County, 41 in Lyon and 17 in Osceola County.

Turning to new positive test results in the past seven days include: 47 in Sioux County, a reduction of 15 cases from last week’s report; 33 in Lyon County, down one from last week; in O’Brien County they report 15 new positives, down one from last week; with Osceola County reporting 11, up 4 from last week.

The report includes vaccination numbers for the four-county area were released, as well.  O’Brien County leads the way with 57%, Osceola County is next at 51.6%, followed by Lyon County at 48.4% and Sioux County at 48.2%. The state’s highest vaccination rate is in southeast Iowa’s Johnson County where 74% of their residents over the age of 16 are fully vaccinated, while the lowest vaccination rate in Iowa of 43.7% is found in Davis County in southeast Iowa.

As of mid-morning Monday, 638 people were hospitalized in Iowa, 78.1% of whom have not been vaccinated, while 161 are receiving care in ICUs around the state. Of those in the ICU, 85.3% are reportedly unvaccinated.

The report also lists COVID outbreaks in 26 Iowa long-term care facilities.
