Sheldon, Iowa — The merger of two separate labor unions representing Sheldon city employees has officially been approved.
The two unions had been talking for months about merging, and the Iowa Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) merged the two unions into one during their meeting Monday (February 4th).
The order from PERB merges the union that had represented street, cemetery, water and wastewater departments into AFSCME (American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees) Council 61, the union that had previously represented only the city’s police officers and dispatchers.
Excluded from union representation, according to the PERB order are the public works director,street department superintendent, city clerk, assistant city clerk, city payroll and bookkeeping clerk, city hall receptionist, water department superintendent, wastewater department superintendent, police chief, assistant police chief, police secretary, mayor, city council, city manager, recreation director, assistant recreation director, economic development director, temporary and seasonal employees.
The merger took affect on Monday, after being approved by PERB.
