Uhl: Wastewater Treatment Project On Schedule

Sheldon, Iowa — The City of Sheldon has a number of projects going on right now, and at Wednesday’s meeting the City Council heard reports on them from Public Works Director Todd Uhl.

Uhl told the council that construction of the new wastewater plant is on schedule, despite some earlier weather concerns. Uhl also said that the work on 16th Street is not going that well. He pointed out that the construction company has used up 63-percent of the construction schedule with only six-percent of the work completed. However, he indicated that this company does good work and things should go faster when they start the paving. He said there are only 30 work days left in the D.O.T. contract for this job.

He noted the Floyd Industrial Park Improvement Project is going at a satisfactory pace with some paving expected in a week or two. (The Floyd Industrial Park is the south end of the area where Ziegler Cat, Bomgaars, and other companies are already located.)

In other action, the council gave their approval to raise the annual salary of the event center manager to $56,375.00.

Police Chief Lyle Bolkema reminded everyone that all drivers need to stop for school buses that are stopped or stopping on the roadways. He said that bus drivers are trained to report drivers who fail to obey that law. City Attorney Micah Schreurs told KIWA after the meeting that the fine plus surcharges for disobeying the school bus law would be $566.25. In addition the driver could lose their license or in some cases would have to serve up to 30 days in jail. Bolkema also warned people to be on the watch for youngsters running across streets, especially in the school areas. On another subject, the police chief informed the council that the ‘Shop with a Cop’ program is assisting 54 kids this year. Each youngster receives $200 to spend on needed items, and they receive a free backpack filled with school supplies. He said the money for the program is donated by individuals and businesses who are very happy to help the kids in this way.
