University of Okoboji Winter Games Take Place This Weekend

Iowa Great Lakes — While most traditional colleges and universities are in the midst of basketball season, one tongue-in-cheek northwest Iowa university is holding their annual winter games this weekend.

The 40th Annual University of Okoboji Winter Games draws large crowds to the Iowa Great Lakes region from every corner of the United States every January. Featuring sporting events including broomball, flag football and softball, the event will also feature a chili cook-off, chocolate classic, polar plunge, fireworks and much more.

The University of Okoboji Winter Games had it’s humble beginnings in 1981, and have grown to a four-day event 40 years later.

This year’s Winter Games kick-off Thursday with a limited schedule of events, and continues Friday. Saturday is the big day of the games, featuring events such as Axe Throwing, Interactive Ice Sculptures, Sledding Hills, 5K Fun Run, Kegs and Eggs, Turkey Bowling, Human Foosball Tournament, Go-Karts on the Ice, Kite Festival, ATV/Motorcycle Studded Ice Oval Races, Human Dogsled Races, Belching Contest and much more. Sunday’s events include an Omelet Brunch with Worship at the Lake, an Indoor Pickleball Tournament, and more.

The 40th Annual University of Okoboji Winter Games runs this Thursday (January 23rd) through Sunday (January 26th) on the campus of the University of Okoboji at the Iowa Great Lakes.
